About Summit County, Colorado
There are few counties in Colorado with a greater selection of real estate for sale than Summit County. The exclusive high-country county, about an hour west of Denver has a wide array of single-family homes, chalets, townhouses and condominiums for sale. Many are mountainside homes or ski condos that are only steps from the slopes. Real estate in Summit County ranges from more affordable homes in blue-collar communities to high-end condos and luxury estates in private communities. The extensive county still has prime land that is undeveloped, and it's a wise spot to build your dream home if the mountains are calling.
Summit County is named for its many magnificent peaks. It is home to four world-class ski areas - Arapahoe Basin, Breckenridge, Copper Mountain and Keystone - and is highly regarded as one of the best skiing destinations in the world. Located along I-70 about 80 miles west of Denver, Summit County is accessible for a weekend getaway from the Mile High City, or to those who come to ski from around the world.
But the county offers more than just remarkable skiing. Residents who call Summit County home come from all walks of life. From uber-luxurious ski mountain estates in Breckenridge to more affordable homes in Frisco and Silverthorne, the county has a broad range of single-family homes, townhouses and condominiums for all income levels. The commonality of those who live here is an affinity to the outdoors, pristine mountain air, awe-inspiring landscapes and an overwhelming sense of freedom - all with an underlying, laid-back vibe.
Summit County comprises a distinctive assortment of towns and a few Census-designated places. Breckenridge is a prime vacation destination for skiing during the winter and countless adventures in the summer, like hiking, biking, fishing and rafting. A former mining town, Breckenridge has a historic downtown with a wonderful assemblage of restaurants, shops and taverns. The town boasts the most places to eat out of any mountain town. Fashionable and chic, Breck has several luxury hotels, upscale homes and high-end condos that cater to the ski flock.
Blue River is a riverside community just south of town with a population of about 850 people. The community sits at more than 10,000 feet above sea level and is near Quandary Peak and the river headwaters. Blue River has several luxury homes that command premium prices.
Copper Mountain is a Census-designated community west of Breckenridge and accessible from Exit 195 on I-70. It comprises three base villages, each with its own exceptional shopping and restaurants. Best known for its awesome skiing, the resort is a haven for summer festivals and events. There are affordable condos and townhomes at the base villages that offer prime access to the lifts.
The "Main Street of the Rockies," Frisco has a fantastic downtown that's surrounded by mountain beauty and things to do. Conveniently located on I-70, Frisco isn't far from all four of the county's ski resorts. There are numerous residential homes with three and four bedrooms that are ideal for working families in the county.
Keystone has a more stylish feel. The glitzy resort's River Run Village at the base of the slopes serves as the center of activity. Visitors can enjoy everything from elegant restaurants to pampering full-service spas. West of Keystone, the Census-designated community of Montezuma is home to larger residences for those who want a more remote feel.
Lake Dillon provides endless entertainment for residents of Dillon and Silverthorne, two working-class towns filled with residents who appreciate the mountain life. Silverthorne has infinite outlet shopping and both towns have a rich history and museums to explore.
To the north on Highway 9, the Census-designated community Heeney consists of a bait shop and Heeney Marina, along with luxury private homes near Green Mountain and the reservoir.
